Industrial 5G Testbeds and Trials Competition for Manufacturing and Logistics Sectors Projects

Wednesday, 11 September 2019

This Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) competition encourages the development of a UK ‘5G ecosystem’ with technology and deployment, testbeds and trials to stimulate the development of 5G use cases and business models.

The 5G Testbeds and Trials Programme (5GTT) is a central part of the government’s 5G ambitions for digital infrastructure in the UK. The government has allocated £200 million to help establish the conditions under which 5G can be deployed in a timely way to maximise the chances of the UK being amongst the leading countries in 5G adoption.

The Industrial 5G Testbeds and Trials Competition is investing in trials of new 5G services and applications in the vertical industry sectors of manufacturing and logistics. The aim of these projects is to demonstrate the value of 5G, beyond enhanced mobile broadband, by targeting industrial uses that can help deliver efficiency, productivity, and other benefits in the UK economy, and help the UK lead the development of enterprise applications for 5G.

This competition is aimed at consortia, led by private sector companies in the UK. It requires the participation of at least one small or medium-sized enterprise (SME). Projects will explore 5G deployment and industrial use cases in the areas of manufacturing and logistics.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is seeking involvement from a range of companies that have the potential to contribute to the testbeds and trials, such as system integrators, mobile and fixed network operators, and equipment suppliers.

For the manufacturing sector there will be 4-6 funded projects, each funded at between £3 million and £4 million. For the logistics sector there will be 2-3 funded projects, each funded at between £5 million and £10 million.
